Strengthening Seattle’s role as a global gateway
The Rome service is a cornerstone in Alaska’s broader global growth strategy, which also includes new long‑haul links from Seattle to London and Tokyo. CEO Ben Minicucci describes the route as a “significant step” that expands how the airline connects guests to the world and “strengthens Seattle’s role as a global gateway,” made possible by employees who deliver “safety, care and performance with every flight.”
The route also creates one of the best one‑stop connections between Hawai‘i and Europe, enabling travellers from the Hawaiian Islands to reach Rome – and onward European destinations – via a single connection in Seattle. It simultaneously opens a new European entry point into Hawai‘i, broadening tourism and cultural links in both directions.
Port of Seattle Commission President Ryan Calkins notes that the route unlocks one of SEA’s largest previously unserved markets and deepens ties between Italy and the Pacific Northwest, particularly around shared strengths in cuisine, culture and natural beauty.
Rome Fiumicino and Alaska’s growing cargo network
For Rome Fiumicino, Alaska’s arrival represents the airline’s first European destination and the first scheduled nonstop link between Rome and Seattle. Ivan Bassato, Chief Aviation Officer at Aeroporti di Roma, says the route strengthens FCO’s role as a leading gateway between Europe and North America, especially to the U.S. Pacific region, and supports Italy’s economic competitiveness by growing high‑value intercontinental connectivity.
The new route is also important for Alaska’s global cargo business. From 28 April, the airline becomes the first U.S. passenger carrier to offer daily nonstop cargo service between Seattle and Rome, extending its cargo network to 109 destinations worldwide and deepening trade ties between Italy and the Pacific Northwest.
What this means for travellers
For West Coast guests, Alaska’s Seattle–Rome nonstop adds a new, convenient option to reach Italy and continental Europe while earning and redeeming Mileage Plan miles. For Italian and broader European travellers, it unlocks nonstop access to Seattle and easy onward connections to Hawai‘i, Alaska, California and the U.S. West Coast, all on a single ticket.
With a thoughtfully timed schedule, upgraded long‑haul cabins and strong connectivity on both sides of the Atlantic, Alaska’s first European route is poised to become a flagship link between the Emerald City and the Eternal City.
