Etihad Airways And World Energy Partner For Sustainability

Etihad Airways has entered a long-term partnership with net-zero solutions supplier World Energy to decarbonize its aircraft through in-sector emissions reductions.

A ground-breaking, industry-first long-term deal between Etihad and World Energy to supply Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) produced in Los Angeles, California, has been implemented with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

After transporting delegates to COP27 from Washington Dulles to Abu Dhabi using SAF via a Book & Claim system, the two companies stated that they had completed the first net-zero flight.

During COP27, Etihad’s regular flight from Washington Dulles to Abu Dhabi was rerouted, saving over 226 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

When it comes to cutting down on air travel’s carbon footprint and making real headway towards climate objectives, the Book & Claim system is often regarded as the most effective option.

Since launching its Greenliner programme in 2020, the airline has conducted several ‘EcoFlights,’ including the most recent, the NetZero trip, to test and validate various concepts.

Mariam Alqubaisi, Etihad’s Head of Sustainability & Business Excellence, said, “Our NetZero flight proved Book & Claim is the only feasible path to net-zero commercial aviation using current technology and is the transition framework required until the supply of sustainable aviation fuel reaches its maturity and availability.”

While “net-zero” commercial aviation is theoretically achievable, there are now substantial practical difficulties to using SAF.

In addition, Etihad is the first commercial airline to participate in World Energy’s recently announced decarbonization service, designed to motivate airlines and corporate climate leaders to take concrete steps towards achieving net-zero emissions.
