First Two-Class A380 Retrofit Takes Flight
Emirates has achieved a major milestone in its multi‑billion‑dollar retrofit program, completing the first-ever reconfiguration of a two‑class Airbus A380 to add Premium Economy and create a three‑cabin layout. The newly refurbished aircraft, registered A6‑EUX, entered service on 20 May 2026 operating flights EK39/40 between Dubai and Birmingham, showcasing fully refreshed interiors across all cabins.
The updated configuration now features 76 Business Class seats, 56 Premium Economy seats and 437 Economy Class seats, reducing overall capacity from 615 to 569 seats while significantly upgrading the onboard product mix. This marks the first of 15 two‑class A380s that Emirates plans to convert as part of its broader fleet enhancement strategy.

Premium Economy Moves to the A380 Upper Deck
In a fleet first, Emirates has positioned its award‑winning Premium Economy cabin on the A380’s upper deck, behind Business Class, in a 2‑3‑2 seat layout. Previously, Premium Economy had only been installed on the main deck of Emirates A380s, making this a notable evolution in how the airline uses the aircraft’s real estate.
The 56 spacious leather seats offer generous recline, full leg and footrests, 6‑way adjustable headrests, built‑in charging ports, and side cocktail tables. Guests in Premium Economy also enjoy an elevated dining experience and Emirates’ latest ice entertainment system via a 13.3‑inch personal screen, positioned as a midpoint between Economy and Business in comfort and amenities.
Refreshed Interiors Across All Three Cabins

Beyond the new cabin, the retrofitted A380 showcases upgraded interiors from nose to tail, incorporating Emirates’ latest design language. Every part of the cabin—from fresh carpets and ceiling panels to sidewalls and lighting—has been refreshed, with modern colour palettes, Ghaf tree motifs and premium wood finishes visible throughout.
Business Class has increased from 58 to 76 seats, benefitting from the removal of upper‑deck Economy seating, while Economy is now fully housed on the main deck with updated fabrics and finishes. The result is a more premium‑weighted layout that aligns with strong demand for higher‑yield cabins on key A380 routes.
Engineering Feat: 35,000 Hours and 2,500 Parts

The retrofit of A6‑EUX was a complex project managed entirely in‑house by Emirates Engineering in Dubai. To create the new upper‑deck layout, engineers removed 120 Economy seats and installed 56 Premium Economy seats plus 18 additional Business Class seats, requiring significant structural and systems modifications.
Work included:
- Reconfiguring and repositioning galleys, stowage units, overhead bins and partitions
- Adjusting electrical wiring and plumbing systems to suit the new layout
- Disassembling and re‑assembling the entire cabin interior with upgraded components
Around 50 engineers and technicians invested approximately 35,000 man‑hours, using more than 2,500 different types of parts. The first retrofit took roughly two months including planning, execution and testing; with process refinements, future two‑class A380 retrofits are expected to be completed in about 30 days each.
Progress of Emirates’ Ambitious Retrofit Programme

Emirates’ retrofit programme, first announced in 2021, is one of the largest interior refurbishment projects in commercial aviation, targeting 219 aircraft—including 110 A380s and 109 Boeing 777s—for complete cabin refreshes. Initially set at 120 aircraft, the scope was expanded in 2024 on the back of strong customer feedback and operational results.
So far, work has been completed on 95 aircraft (42 A380s and 53 Boeing 777s), meaning more than a third of the current Emirates fleet already features the updated interiors and Premium Economy product. A dedicated retrofit team of around 270 staff is delivering an average of two fully refreshed aircraft per month from Emirates Engineering’s Dubai hangars.

Upcycling Cabins: The “Aircrafted” Collections
In line with Emirates’ sustainability ambitions, materials removed from retrofitted A380s and 777s are evaluated for upcycling as part of the airline’s “Aircrafted” programme. This initiative has produced limited‑edition luggage, bags and accessories made from repurposed seat leather, belts, fabrics and other cabin elements.
Recent projects include the “Aircrafted” collector pieces and “Aircrafted for Kids” backpacks, crafted from former Economy Class seat fabrics. To date, around 4,000 Aircrafted for Kids backpacks have been donated to children in 10 countries, combining waste reduction with community support.
What’s Next for the Two-Class A380 Fleet
With the successful debut of A6‑EUX, Emirates plans to retrofit all 15 of its two‑class A380s by the end of 2026, standardising Premium Economy across more of its flagship superjumbo fleet. These aircraft will gradually be deployed on routes where demand for the intermediate cabin is strongest, adding capacity in a segment that has proven popular since Emirates first introduced Premium Economy in 2021.
Running alongside the interior retrofit, Emirates is also rolling out Starlink high‑speed Wi‑Fi across much of its fleet, further enhancing the onboard experience with fast, complimentary connectivity at cruising altitude.
