AmaWaterways Raises the Bar on the Danube
AmaWaterways has given river cruising a fresh dose of ambition with the first look at AmaRudi, its second double-width ship and now the largest river cruise ship in Europe. Set to debut on the Danube River in spring 2027, the ship builds on the success of AmaMagna while pushing the idea of space, comfort and choice even further.
That matters because river cruising is increasingly attracting travellers who want the intimacy of a smaller vessel without giving up the amenities usually found on larger ships. AmaRudi looks designed to deliver exactly that.
A Bigger Ship With A Personal Feel

AmaRudi will carry just 196 guests in 98 staterooms and suites, which is a strikingly low passenger count for a ship of this size. That gives the vessel a rare mix of scale and space: more room to spread out, but still the kind of personal atmosphere river cruisers tend to love. It is also the first ship in the company’s history to be named after a man, honouring co-founder Rudi Schreiner.
That naming choice gives the ship a nice sense of legacy. Schreiner’s connection to the Danube and his role in shaping modern river cruising make the launch feel both forward-looking and personal. In a market where ships can sometimes blur together, that kind of story helps a new vessel stand out.
Dining, Wellness And Fun
AmaRudi’s onboard experience is clearly being built around variety. Dining options will include Journey’s Restaurant, The Chef’s Table, al fresco venues and Rudi’s Wine Bar, along with a deck barbecue on the Sun Deck. Guests can also expect a more generous drinks offering during lunch and dinner, plus new Italian lunch menus at The Chef’s Table.
Wellness is another big focus. The ship will feature massage rooms, hair and nail services, a fitness centre, wellness hosts and a Sun Deck pickleball court. That combination suggests AmaWaterways is aiming for a ship that feels active, social and relaxed all at once—which is not a bad recipe for a Danube voyage.
New Spaces For Socialising

One of the most interesting additions is a brand-new entertainment venue created exclusively for AmaRudi. It will include a cinema, karaoke, billiards and a jukebox, all wrapped in soundproofed design so the fun does not spill into the rest of the ship. That is a clever move, because it gives the ship a livelier personality without sacrificing comfort.
This kind of design is a sign that river cruise ships are evolving beyond the traditional quiet-elegance formula. AmaWaterways seems to be creating a ship that has room for both a peaceful afternoon and a playful evening. That balance could be a real draw for couples, groups and repeat river cruisers.
A More Sustainable Design

AmaRudi will also continue AmaWaterways’ emphasis on sustainability. The ship will feature Stage V engines, solar panels, shore power connectivity, spud poles and lightweight materials intended to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. That is increasingly important for a line operating in Europe’s waterways, where responsible design is part of the broader guest expectation.
The result is a ship that feels like both a statement and a continuation of what AmaWaterways does best. It respects the intimacy of river cruising while stretching the category in size, style and onboard choice. For travellers eyeing the Danube in 2027, AmaRudi is already looking like one to watch.
