For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, long-haul low-cost carrier AirAsiaX is preparing to resume flights to Australian cities and New Zealand.
From November 1, 2022, the airline will resume flights from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, and Auckland.
All of these are among the locations that AirAsia indicated it would restart when it announced its ambitions to return to the skies in June 2022.
Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Auckland will transit through Sydney, adding competition to the lucrative trans-Tasman route between Australia and New Zealand.
“In 2019, we flew over a million guests to both nations, demonstrating that Australia and New Zealand are major markets for us, and we connected the same number of Australians and New Zealanders to Malaysia and beyond ASEAN,” stated AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail in a July 18, 2022, statement.
“After a two-year break, we are returning stronger than ever and proud to resume our commitment to making medium to long-haul air travel accessible for everyone in this area and across ASEAN,” Ismail said.
The airline stated that it will begin with three flights per week to each capital city and gradually increase the number of flights until the first quarter of 2023.
As demand for travel rises, AirAsia X returns to the skies with low-cost long-haul destinations, including three new routes.
