Viking Levels Up European River Voyages
Viking is rolling out a fresh wave of European river experiences that go way beyond the usual city tour and church stop. From scenic Zeppelin flights over Germany to immersive food‑forward excursions and fully guided land extensions, 2026–2027 are shaping up to be big years for first‑time river cruisers and seasoned Viking fans alike.
These new offerings are now open for booking and span the Rhine, Danube, Seine and Elbe, plus add‑on stays in Italy, France, Croatia, Slovenia, Belgium and the Netherlands. You can explore itineraries and dates on viking.com.
Take to the Skies: New Zeppelin Flights in Germany
Viking’s headline‑grabbing addition is a pair of Zeppelin airship flights offered on select Rhine River itineraries—perfect if you love a good “wow, I actually did that” travel story.
- Zeppelin Flight Over the Ruhr Valley – Guests are driven to Essen/Mülheim Airport to board a modern Zeppelin that gently ascends to just over 1,000 feet, gliding over Lake Baldeney, lush forests and the historic Ruhr industrial heartland. You’ll fly past Zeche Zollverein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site often dubbed the “Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr,” before circling back to the airport.
- Zeppelin Flight Over Cologne – Departing from Bonn‑Hangelar Airfield, this excursion offers a bird’s‑eye view of Cologne’s skyline, including the Trade Fair complex, Lanxess Arena, the arches of the Hohenzollern Bridge and the iconic UNESCO‑listed Cologne Cathedral. On the way back, you’ll spot modern landmarks like the Musical Dome and Mediapark from above.
It’s a very Viking twist: classic engineering heritage plus epic views, neatly slotted into a river itinerary you can still enjoy at water level.
New Shore Excursions: Food, Wine and Story‑Rich Cities
Starting with the 2026 season, Viking is expanding its already dense excursion menu with a set of culinary and cultural experiences designed for guests who want to dig a little deeper into local life along the rivers. Highlights include:
- Dinner at Nikolaihof Winery (Danube) – In Austria’s Wachau Valley, visit one of the country’s oldest wineries, learn about its pioneering biodynamic approach, explore the cellar and oak barrels, and sit down to a seasonal dinner featuring game and produce sourced from the estate and nearby farms.
- Dürnstein on Foot & Local Dinner (Danube) – Wander the 12th‑century town of Dürnstein on a guided walk that touches on its medieval castle and Richard the Lionheart connection, then dine in Alte Klosterkeller, a former monastery cellar, with regional dishes and local wines.
- Sights & Flavors of Belgrade (Danube) – Tour Belgrade’s key landmarks before diving into Kalenić Market, the city’s largest open‑air market, to shop for ingredients and join a cooking class featuring traditional Serbian dishes you’ll then sit down to enjoy.
- Red Stone Castle & Wine Tasting (Danube) – Head into Slovakia’s Little Carpathians to explore Red Stone Castle, a 16th‑century fortress turned aristocratic residence, followed by a tasting of local white wines at a nearby winery.
- Sights & Tastes of Rouen (Seine) – During the Christmas season, discover Rouen Cathedral, the Old Market Square where Joan of Arc was executed, and sample pastries and treats at boulangeries and patisseries, all wrapped in Normandy’s festive atmosphere.
- Flavors of Berlin (Elbe) – On the Christmas Along the Elbe itinerary, join a food‑focused city tour with stops such as Lindner for Berliner Boulette and delicacies, EAT Berlin for cheeses and condiments, Curry 61 for currywurst, and a café for the classic German coffee‑and‑cake ritual.
If your happy place is a market, a wine cellar or a cozy restaurant locals actually use, these should be right in your lane.
Small Group Experiences: Big Sights, Fewer People
Beginning in 2026, Viking is adding Small Group Experiences across select European river itineraries, giving you more intimate access to major landmarks and atmospheric towns. The idea is simple: same icons, fewer fellow guests.
New options include:
- The Palace of Versailles – A more personal guided exploration of the palace and gardens, with time to absorb the art, architecture and stories of French royalty without feeling rushed.
- Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna – Dive into Habsburg history in a smaller group as you move through Schönbrunn’s lavish rooms and landscaped grounds.
- Český Krumlov on Foot – Wander a fairy‑tale Bohemian town in the Czech Republic with its cobbled lanes and historic center, guided but comfortably uncrowded.
- Medieval Village of Colmar – Explore Colmar’s half‑timbered houses, canals and medieval charm in a small group that can easily navigate the old town’s narrow streets.
- Picturesque Bratislava – Take in Slovakia’s capital with a more relaxed small‑group visit to its old town, Baroque architecture and local cultural highlights.
For travellers who love iconic sites but not big groups, these experiences hit a very sweet spot.
New Land Extensions: Alps, Wine Regions and Culture‑Packed Cities
Viking is also leaning harder into pre‑ and post‑cruise land extensions, giving you a good excuse to turn a one‑week river sailing into a deeper European adventure. New fully guided extensions launching in 2026 and 2027 include:
- St. Moritz, Lombardy & Alpine Train (from 2026) – Board the Bernina Express along a UNESCO‑listed Alpine route, explore Chur’s old town, head into St. Moritz’s mountain scenery and finish in Milan, Northern Italy’s cultural and style capital.
- Croatia & Slovenia (from 2026) – Soak up Ljubljana’s charm, Lake Bled, Radovljica and Zagreb’s medieval old town, plus a visit to Festetics Palace in Keszthely—a neat blend of history, lakes and Central European culture.
- Best of Belgium (from 2026) – Dive into Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp: UNESCO‑listed medieval cores, canals, guild houses and the buzz of Europe’s diamond capital.
- Best of Holland (from 2026) – Explore Delft and its Royal Dutch Delftware Manufactory, Gouda’s heritage and stroopwafels, The Hague’s landmarks and masterpieces at the Mauritshuis and Rijksmuseum.
- Turin & Barolo (from 2027) – Discover Turin’s Baroque architecture and piazzas, then head into the Langhe wine region for Barolo and the UNESCO‑listed landscapes around Alba and Chambéry.
- Seville & Córdoba (from 2027) – Immerse yourself in Andalusia’s Moorish‑meets‑Roman legacy with Seville’s cathedral and Alcázar and Córdoba’s Mosque‑Cathedral, both UNESCO standouts.
If you’ve ever thought “one week just isn’t enough,” these add‑ons are Viking’s way of saying: you’re absolutely right.
Oberammergau 2030 and Booking Perks
Looking a bit further ahead, Viking has confirmed it will return to Bavaria for the Oberammergau Passion Play 2030 and is already accepting sign‑ups from guests who want first notice when departures open. Viking has partnered with the Passion Play since 2010 and is currently the #1 North American partner, which helps them lock in tickets and space years in advance.
For those ready to book sooner, Viking’s current Summer Sale (for North American travellers) runs through June 30, 2026 and offers:
- Reduced fares on select river, ocean and expedition itineraries
- Up to free international airfare on qualifying sailings
- A $25 deposit on all itineraries
If you like your river cruising with a side of Zeppelin, Alpine trains, Christmas markets and small‑group palace time, this new wave of experiences might be your sign to finally lock in that Rhine or Danube trip.
Would you be more excited to add a Zeppelin flight over Germany to your itinerary, or you rather spend the extra time on a land extension in, say, the Alps or Andalusia?
