EXPLORA III: Sea Trials Complete, Launch in Sight
Explora Journeys has confirmed that EXPLORA III has successfully completed her third round of sea trials in the Mediterranean, marking a major step towards her entry into service later this year. The trials validated the 72,810 GT ship’s technical and nautical performance under real‑world conditions, keeping her firmly on track for the Mediterranean Prelude Journey departing 24 July 2026.
You can read the official announcement and ship details on the brand’s site: Explora Journeys – Sea Trials for EXPLORA III.
First LNG-Powered Ship in the Explora Fleet
EXPLORA III is especially significant because she is the first LNG‑powered ship in the Explora Journeys fleet, ushering in a new phase of lower‑emission propulsion for the brand. Running on liquefied natural gas gives the vessel an immediate emissions advantage over conventional marine fuels and also provides flexibility to use renewable alternatives such as bio‑LNG and synthetic LNG as they scale, aligning with the company’s pathway towards net‑zero maritime emissions by 2050.
From EXPLORA III onwards, all newbuilds (III–VI) will feature LNG capability, with EXPLORA V and VI also being prepared for advanced fuel cell technology that can convert LNG into hydrogen to reduce emissions further while in port. For guests, this means the same ultra‑elegant onboard experience with a lighter environmental footprint and a clear trajectory of continuous innovation behind the scenes.
Halfway to a Six-Ship Ultra-Luxury Fleet
With EXPLORA I and EXPLORA II already in operation and EXPLORA III now through sea trials, Explora Journeys has reached the halfway point of its planned six‑ship fleet, all built by Fincantieri. According to the latest construction timeline, EXPLORA III joins in 2026, followed by EXPLORA IV and EXPLORA V in 2027 and EXPLORA VI in 2028, bringing the full fleet to six ships by 2028.
Explora Journeys’ president Anna Nash described the sea‑trial milestone as proof of the brand’s momentum and its “conscious approach to luxury ocean travel,” emphasising that EXPLORA III embodies both thoughtful innovation and a commitment to exceptional guest experiences. Once she enters service, Explora will have three ships sailing simultaneously for the first time, underscoring how quickly the brand’s original vision is being realised.
Mediterranean Prelude, Naming and Maiden Journey
Following sea trials, EXPLORA III has returned to Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente yard near Genoa for interior outfitting and final finishing touches ahead of her early delivery. Her inaugural sequence unfolds in three key stages:
- Mediterranean Prelude Journey – 24–29 July 2026
A five‑night “prelude” sailing from Genoa to Civitavecchia (Rome) via Marseille, Saint‑Tropez, Villefranche‑sur‑Mer (Nice) and Livorno, designed as an intimate first look at the new ship. - Official Naming Ceremony – 1 August 2026
EXPLORA III will arrive in Barcelona, where she will be officially named on 1 August at MSC Group’s new cruise terminal. - Seven‑Night Maiden Journey – from 3 August 2026
Two days after the naming, she will depart Barcelona on a seven‑night maiden voyage to Lisbon, formally opening her first full season.
The Mediterranean Prelude itinerary and booking details are available on the Explora site under “A Mediterranean Prelude to EXPLORA III”.
An Inaugural Season from Fjords to Fall Foliage
After her Mediterranean debut, EXPLORA III will head north into cooler waters for a deeply scenic inaugural season. Explora Journeys’ latest deployment plans show the ship sailing through Norway’s fjords, Iceland and Greenland, giving guests long daylight hours, dramatic coastlines and wildlife‑rich itineraries across Northern Europe.
Later in the year, she will cross the Atlantic to explore New England and Canada’s East Coast during the autumn months, pairing Explora’s design‑driven onboard experience with fall foliage, historic ports and coastal towns. Each itinerary is framed as a “Journey” rather than a cruise, with an emphasis on slower travel, longer stays and curated access in port—continuing the brand’s aim to make the ocean itself feel like the destination.
