Viking’s 2026 Alaska Season Sets Sail
Viking has officially opened its 2026 Alaska season, leaning into longer, more immersive itineraries just as much of the market continues to focus on classic seven‑night cruises. The first departure of the season is the 23‑day North Pacific Passage repositioning voyage aboard Viking Orion, sailing from Tokyo to Vancouver and linking Japan and Canada with time in Alaska.
This extended itinerary will run a further two times during the season, with the final sailing embarking on 23 September.
North Pacific Passage: Japan to Canada via Alaska
Viking’s North Pacific Passage is designed as a true trans‑Pacific journey, combining Japanese ports, scenic sea days and key Alaska calls before finishing in Vancouver. The 23‑day route gives guests the chance to experience three distinct cultures in one trip—Japan, Alaska and coastal Canada—rather than treating Alaska as a standalone destination.
With multiple departures across the 2026 season, the itinerary caters to travellers who have the time to slow down and want a more in‑depth experience on both sides of the Pacific, not just a one‑week snapshot of the Inside Passage.
Alaska & the Inside Passage on Viking Venus
Viking’s signature regional sailing, the 11‑day “Alaska & the Inside Passage” itinerary, begins its 2026 run tomorrow from Vancouver aboard Viking Venus. There are 22 departures scheduled for the season, with the final voyage leaving on 13 September, giving advisors a wide range of dates to match school holidays, shoulder seasons and peak summer demand.
Compared to the seven‑night norm in the Alaska market, Viking’s 11‑day format builds in extra time for scenic cruising, more ports and greater odds of memorable wildlife encounters. Guests can expect a mix of glacier viewing, coastal communities and fjord‑like waterways that play to Viking’s adult‑focused, enrichment‑driven style.
Enrichment, Wildlife and Onboard Historians
A hallmark of Viking’s Alaska program is the use of onboard historians and expert lecturers to add context to what guests see ashore and from the ship. Talks and hosted sessions cover Indigenous cultures, early exploration, Russian and American periods in Alaska’s history, and the science behind glaciers, fjords and regional wildlife.
On longer itineraries, this enrichment layer combines with extended time in port and scenic cruising days, giving travellers a more complete sense of place than a quick port‑to‑port schedule can provide.
Pre‑ and Post‑Cruise Extensions
For 2026, Viking is also emphasising land extensions that complement its Alaska voyages. Guests can tack on pre‑ or post‑cruise journeys such as the Rocky Mountaineer rail experience, a Denali Explorer tour, or shorter stays in gateway cities like Vancouver and Anchorage.
These curated add‑ons are designed to turn an 11‑day sailing into a longer North American adventure, appealing especially to long‑haul guests who want to make the most of the trip once they’ve flown to the region.
Looking Ahead: 2028 Alaska Season on Sale
Looking further out, Viking has already opened bookings for its 2028 Alaska season, giving travel advisors and guests a long runway to lock in preferred departure dates and cabin categories. Early access also helps repeat Viking cruisers line up key itineraries like Alaska & the Inside Passage or future North Pacific Passage departures around milestone trips and multi‑segment journeys.
To support education and sales, Viking will host a Virtual Explorer Session on Alaska & the Inside Passage on 25 June, offering advisors and clients a detailed look at the itinerary via an expert‑led presentation.
If you were planning an Alaska trip with Viking, would you lean toward the 11‑day Inside Passage cruise or commit to the full 23‑day North Pacific Passage from Tokyo to Vancouver?
