Fincantieri and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) have celebrated a major milestone with the official launch of Norwegian Aura at the Monfalcone shipyard in Italy, marking the start of the final outfitting and interior fit‑out phase for what will become the largest ship in NCL’s fleet. Delivery of the newbuild—part of the expanded Prima Plus platform—is scheduled for spring 2027, ahead of her debut season in Europe and subsequent deployment to Miami.
Norwegian Aura: Bigger, Bolder Prima Plus Design
With a gross tonnage of around 170,000 GT and a length of approximately 344 metres, Norwegian Aura is about 10% larger than her Prima Plus sisters Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna. She will feature 1,976 cabins and accommodate around 3,880 guests at double occupancy, pushing NCL’s Prima‑era design into a larger, more activity‑rich format while retaining a strong focus on outdoor living and guest flow.
Signature elements of the Aura project include:
- A large multi‑deck water park, with more slides than any previous NCL ship, including dual mat racing slides and a dramatic free‑fall body slide.
- A rope course and vertical climbing wall, adding fresh adrenaline options to the open‑air activity deck.
- An expanded version of Ocean Boulevard, NCL’s wraparound 360‑degree outdoor promenade, which will be larger than on earlier Prima and Prima Plus vessels and fitted with more infinity pools, hot tubs and lounge seating.
These features will be integrated into Ocean Heights, a multi‑deck outdoor activity zone spanning the upper levels, combining water slides, challenge activities and evening lighting effects for day‑to‑night entertainment.
Launch Ceremony & Focus On Future Talent

The launch ceremony at Monfalcone, which officially marked Norwegian Aura’s transition from hull completion to interior outfitting, was attended by Andrea Marongiu, Senior Director of Newbuilding Project Owner for NCL, and Cristiano Bazzara, Director of the Monfalcone shipyard.
In a nod to the shipyard’s role in regional development, students from local Technical Institutes and Higher Technical Institutes (ITS) were also present, underlining Fincantieri’s commitment to building pathways between education and industry. The group collaborates with high schools and ITS academies across Italy to develop specialised shipbuilding skills and support young people in career orientation and workforce integration.
Fincantieri & NCLH: A Long-Term Strategic Partnership
Norwegian Aura is part of the long‑standing partnership between Fincantieri and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH), the parent company of NCL, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Recent orders—including three additional next‑generation ships, one for each brand—bring the total number of vessels built or on order for NCLH at Fincantieri to 16, with scheduled deliveries through 2037.
This collaboration has supported NCLH’s fleet evolution from earlier Breakaway and Breakaway Plus designs through to the latest Prima and Prima Plus classes, enabling the introduction of innovative layouts, enhanced efficiency and ever‑higher onboard experience standards. Norwegian Aura continues that trajectory, scaling up the Prima Plus concept while integrating lessons from Aqua and Luna’s early years in service.
Monfalcone: A Centre Of Excellence For Cruise Newbuilds

The Monfalcone shipyard remains a central production hub for Fincantieri’s cruise segment, recognised as a centre of excellence for next‑generation ships. To date, the yard has delivered more than 40 modern cruise vessels and continues to invest in infrastructure, safety and workforce facilities to support increasingly complex projects.
Approximately 6,500 people work on site at Monfalcone, with the broader supply chain generating over 23,000 total jobs, making the yard a key contributor to the regional and national economy. Continuous upgrades to equipment, processes and training are helping Fincantieri deliver larger, more efficient and more guest‑centric ships like Norwegian Aura while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Summary
With the launch of Norwegian Aura, Fincantieri and Norwegian Cruise Line have reached a key milestone on NCL’s largest ship to date—a 170,000 GT Prima Plus evolution featuring expansive outdoor spaces, a record‑setting water park and an enhanced Ocean Boulevard promenade. Backed by a long‑term newbuild partnership and the industrial strength of the Monfalcone shipyard, Aura is on track for delivery in spring 2027, further cementing Fincantieri’s role as a leader in large cruise ship construction and marking the next step in NCL’s fleet transformation.
