Thai Cave Rescue Hero Heads to Antarctica
Aurora Expeditions has added a very compelling special guest to two of its Antarctic voyages: Dr Richard “Harry” Harris OAM, the Australian cave diver and anaesthetist best known for his role in the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue. It is the kind of guest announcement that instantly elevates an expedition from impressive to unforgettable.
Harris will join Across the Antarctic Circle on 28 February 2027 and Antarctica Complete on 1 February 2028, bringing more than 30 years of experience in cave diving, technical diving, exploration and rescue. He will also contribute to Aurora’s polar dive program, giving qualified divers a rare chance to learn from one of the world’s most accomplished underwater specialists in one of the planet’s most remote environments.
A Story Of Skill And Resilience

Harris’ onboard talks will go well beyond the headline-making Thai cave rescue, where he played a critical role in saving 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave system in Chiang Rai. Those sessions are expected to explore resilience, leadership and decision-making under pressure, which makes perfect sense for a man whose career has been shaped by high-stakes environments.
For Aurora’s dive community, his presence adds a different kind of depth. The line’s polar dive program is already one of its signature adventure offerings, and having a world-leading technical diver on board should make the experience even more memorable. This is not just a celebrity appearance; it is a genuine exchange of expertise.
Why Antarctica Makes Sense
It also helps that Harris is about to experience Antarctica for the first time. For someone who has spent decades exploring challenging underwater worlds, the southern continent feels like a fitting next frontier. In his own words, it is a bucket-list opportunity, and that enthusiasm is exactly what expedition cruising does best: pairing rare places with people who have something real to say about them.
Aurora’s two voyages are strong choices for the program. Across the Antarctic Circle offers a 13-day route aboard Greg Mortimer, with dramatic ice scenery, Zodiac cruising and wildlife sightings. Antarctica Complete stretches to 23 days aboard Sylvia Earle, linking the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctic Circle, South Georgia and the Falklands for a deeper polar journey.
A Strong Fit For Aurora
Aurora Expeditions has long leaned into expert-led adventure, so Harris feels like a natural fit for the brand. His background in technical diving and rescue work matches the spirit of polar exploration: thoughtful, skilled and built around respect for extreme environments. That combination should resonate with guests who want more than scenery from their voyage.
For travellers drawn to Antarctica’s raw beauty, this is an especially appealing twist. You get the ice, the wildlife and the remoteness, but also the chance to hear firsthand from someone whose life’s work has involved courage, precision and calm under pressure. That is the kind of story people remember long after they come home.
