Hyatt to Acquire Mr & Mrs Smith Collection to Strengthen its Luxury Position

Mr & Mrs Smith, a London-based travel club and hotel booking service, has agreed to be acquired by Hyatt Hotels Corp. for 53 million British pounds.

Mr & Mrs Smith, which was founded in 2003, promotes itself as a “travel club for hotel lovers.” The firm specialises in boutique and premium properties, with over 1,500 hand-picked and independently evaluated hotels and villas on its website.

Members who book stays enjoy “guaranteed best prices” and complementary extras upon arrival, as well as 24/7 access to Mr & Mrs Smith’s in-house travel professionals. The group has over one million members and is completely free to join.

“We are excited by this planned acquisition and to explore bringing guests and World of Hyatt members even more global luxury offerings across hundreds of geographies — including over 20 countries where there are currently no Hyatt hotels, such as Fiji, Croatia, Iceland, and Anguilla,” said Mark Vondrasek, Hyatt’s chief commercial officer.

Hyatt stated that it intends to make Mr & Mrs Smith platform properties directly bookable through Hyatt’s distribution channels, including Hyatt.com and the World of Hyatt app, and that it is also looking into ways to enable World of Hyatt members to earn and redeem points at eligible Mr & Mrs Smith network hotels.

Subject to routine closing conditions, the transaction is scheduled to conclude in the second quarter of this year.

Following the completion of the transaction, more than 100 Mr & Mrs Smith employees will join Hyatt’s commercial services team. Tamara and James Lohan, co-founders of Mr & Mrs Smith, will continue on board, with Tamara serving as CEO and James as chief creative officer, respectively.

Mr & Mrs Smith’s acquisition follows Hyatt’s Apple Leisure Group acquisitions in 2021 and Dream Hotel Group late last year.
