AmaWaterways has officially welcomed AmaSofia, its newest river ship, in a glittering christening ceremony on the Rhine that brought together more than 1,200 travel advisors during the ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam. The event not only marked the start of AmaSofia’s 2026 season but also the European debut of AmaWaterways’ refreshed branding and colours, signalling an exciting new chapter for the river line.
A Godmother from the Advisor Community
The christening on 14 March 2026 was hosted across AmaPrima, AmaVenita and AmaSofia, with travel advisors invited onboard to join the celebrations and ship visits. Sarah Little, Senior Vice President of Business Development at ASTA and a long-time advocate for travel advisors, served as godmother of AmaSofia, officially naming the ship before a spectacular 300‑drone light show over the Rhine closed both the ceremony and the ASTA River Cruise Expo.

AmaWaterways CEO Catherine Powell highlighted how ships “come to life through people” – crew, guests and the advisor community – and said having Little as godmother reflects the company’s deep partnership with travel sellers. Little noted that her very first river cruise was with AmaWaterways, making the christening of AmaSofia especially meaningful.
Inside AmaSofia: Twin Balconies and Refreshed Branding
AmaSofia is the first ship in Europe to showcase AmaWaterways’ updated branding and colour palette, while retaining the line’s hallmark focus on light-filled spaces and intimate capacity. Key stats and features include:
- Up to 154 guests across 76 staterooms
- Suites up to 350 square feet (approx. 32 sqm) for extra space on longer journeys
- AmaWaterways’ signature twin‑balcony design in most staterooms, combining a French balcony and an outside step‑out balcony for flexible river views
- The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant, where guests enjoy a hosted tasting menu at no additional cost
The ship will also offer the line’s usual inclusions, such as guided shore excursions, complimentary beer and wine with meals and a wellness‑minded approach to river cruising.

2026 Itineraries: Rhine to Danube (and Christmas Markets)
AmaSofia began sailing early on the Rhine so AmaWaterways could mark the christening milestone alongside its travel partners at the Expo. Through April and May 2026, the ship will operate Rhine voyages including the popular Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps itinerary, combining storybook towns with alpine scenery.
In June, AmaSofia will reposition to the Danube, with a first Danube departure scheduled for 7 June 2026. Throughout the year she will sail several of AmaWaterways’ most sought-after itineraries, primarily between Budapest and Vilshofen:
- Romantic Danube – classic Danube capitals and wine regions
- Melodies of the Danube – a music-and-history-rich route through Central Europe
- Christmas Markets on the Danube – festive sailings amid Europe’s best-loved riverside markets
Built with Advisors in Mind
The Rhine christening was designed very deliberately around the travel advisor community. More than 100 advisors will sail on AmaSofia during a post‑Expo FAM cruise, with additional familiarisation sailings offered later in the year so partners can experience the ship and refreshed branding first‑hand. Powell emphasised that as AmaWaterways grows, its commitment to both guests and travel partners remains central, and that AmaSofia’s launch is as much about a shared journey as it is about a new ship.
