Scenic Group has announced a major expansion of its river cruise fleet, confirming three new luxury river ships that will sail in Europe and Asia from 2027 and 2028. The move reflects strong confidence in global demand for river cruising across the company’s Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and Emerald Cruises brands, according to chair Glen Moroney.
Scenic Group’s Next Phase of River Growth
The newbuild program includes two ultra‑luxury Scenic Space‑Ships and one Emerald Star‑Ship, all designed to enhance Scenic Group’s offering on Europe’s iconic rivers and Asia’s Mekong. Together, they will further strengthen a portfolio that already includes multiple Scenic Space‑Ships in Europe and the award‑winning Scenic Spirit on the Mekong.
Emerald Nova will be the first of the trio to launch, followed by Scenic Aria and Scenic Spirit II. The ships are scheduled to enter service progressively between June 2027 and early 2028, giving trade partners and guests plenty of forward visibility for future itineraries.
Emerald Nova: Douro Debut in June 2027

Emerald Nova, a next‑generation Emerald Star‑Ship, will debut on Portugal’s Douro River in June 2027. Purpose‑built for the Douro, she will join Emerald Radiance and operate immersive itineraries through the vine‑covered Douro Valley, from Porto to Spain’s border. Douro itineraries are expected to feature overnight stays in ports, wine‑focused shore experiences, and Emerald’s signature EmeraldPLUS and EmeraldACTIVE programs.
As with other Emerald Star‑Ships, Emerald Nova is anticipated to offer contemporary interiors, spacious cabins, an open‑air Sun Deck and a relaxed, inclusive onboard experience tailored to active, curious travellers. This launch underscores Emerald Cruises’ continued investment in Europe’s most sought‑after river regions.
Scenic Aria: Ultra‑Luxury Douro Space‑Ship
In September 2027, Scenic Aria will follow on the Douro River as a new ultra‑luxury Scenic Space‑Ship. She will complement the existing Scenic Azure, which already sets the standard for all‑inclusive ultra‑luxury on the Douro with spacious suites, Scenic Sun Lounges and a near 1:2 crew‑to‑guest ratio.
Scenic Aria is expected to bring Scenic’s hallmark features—generously sized suites with Scenic Slumber Beds and pillow menus, multiple dining venues, wellness areas and butler service—to a new generation of Douro itineraries. This second vessel on the “River of Gold” will increase capacity and itinerary choice at a time when demand for Portugal river cruising continues to grow.
Scenic Spirit II: Next‑Generation Mekong Luxury in 2028
The final ship in the expansion, Scenic Spirit II, will launch on the Mekong River in early 2028. She will build on the success of the original Scenic Spirit, a 68‑guest ultra‑luxury ship that offers spacious suites, world‑class dining and fully inclusive experiences between Vietnam and Cambodia.
Scenic Spirit II will further elevate Scenic’s position in South East Asia, providing more capacity and updated design for guests cruising between Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. With continued interest in authentic, small‑ship exploration of the Mekong, the new ship signals Scenic Group’s long‑term commitment to Asia’s river cruise market.
