Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA) has made history by topping a global list of regional airline operators to clinch the 2024 Best Regional Airline title in the Airline Excellence Awards. The awards, presented annually by leading aviation ratings website AirlineRatings.com, are judged by five editors with over 180 years of combined industry experience.
The awards combine foremost safety and government audits with 12 critical criteria, including fleet age, safety rating, passenger reviews, profitability, product offerings, and staff relations. VARA’s recognition in these awards underscores its commitment to exceptional customer service, delivered by its dedicated team every day.
VARA Executive General Manager Nathan Miller expressed his delight at the airline’s recognition. “VARA has been a proud fixture in the Western Australian landscape for over six decades, playing an important role in connecting communities across our vast state,” he said. “Being awarded Regional Airline of the Year is an honour that underscores our commitment to exceptional customer service, which is delivered by our incredible team each and every day.”
This award follows several exciting milestones for VARA as it diversifies its charter portfolio and expands its reach in Western Australia. This month, VARA commenced a consultation process on acquiring at least four new-generation aircraft to replace its aging F100 fleet. The potential replacement aircraft types would provide superior performance to the F100 and lower fuel consumption and emissions by employing geared turbofan engines, enhanced customer products, and improved operational performance.
VARA, formerly known as Skywest, joined the Virgin Australia Group in 2013 and now employs over 450 team members, operating more than 250 services on F100 and A320 aircraft each week. The regional airline holds the highest seven-star safety rating with AirlineRatings.com, which delivers expert safety ratings for airlines around the world.
This recognition marks a significant milestone in VARA’s journey, reflecting its commitment to safety, customer service, and operational excellence. As VARA continues to grow and innovate, it remains dedicated to connecting communities across Western Australia and delivering an exceptional travel experience for its passengers.
