Lufthansa has officially launched a major cabin‑modernisation program for its Airbus A380 fleet, beginning a full Business Class retrofit that will significantly enhance the long‑haul experience for travellers. The upgrade is part of the airline’s most extensive fleet renewal in its history, which includes new seats across all classes on the Boeing 747‑8 and Airbus A350‑900.

A380 Retrofit Underway in Dresden
The first aircraft to undergo the transformation—known internally as “Mike‑Charly”—entered Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden in early February. All eight A380s in the Lufthansa fleet will follow, with the full retrofit program scheduled for completion by mid‑2027.
During each aircraft’s time in Dresden, routine maintenance checks will also be carried out, ensuring the fleet returns to service in optimal condition.
A New Business Class Experience

The upgraded A380 Business Class will feature premium seats from Thompson, designed to deliver a more spacious, private and technologically advanced experience. Key enhancements include:
- Direct aisle access for every seat
- 58 cm seat width
- Fully flat beds at least two metres long
- Bluetooth connectivity for personal audio devices
- Flexible privacy partitions
These improvements reflect Lufthansa’s commitment to offering a more refined and comfortable long‑haul product, particularly on routes where the A380 remains a customer favourite.

Once fully retrofitted, the A380 will feature:
- 8 First Class seats
- 68 Business Class seats
- 52 Premium Economy seats
- 371 Economy seats

This configuration reinforces the A380’s role as the airline’s most spacious long‑haul aircraft, ideal for high‑demand international routes.
The first upgraded aircraft is expected to return to Munich in April, ready to re‑enter regular service with its refreshed Business Class cabin.
Conclusion
Lufthansa’s A380 retrofit marks a significant investment in passenger comfort and premium long‑haul travel. With modern Business Class seating, enhanced privacy and a refreshed cabin design, the airline is elevating the onboard experience while strengthening its position as a leader in European aviation.
