Flying Vietnam Airlines from Sydney to Hanoi
I travelled direct from Sydney to Hanoi with Vietnam Airlines, which operates this route three times weekly (Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday). For this journey, I chose economy class to see whether the airline’s glowing reputation could meet my own expectations — and I’m happy to report that it delivered above and beyond.
Vietnam Airlines uses the Airbus A350-900 on this route: modern, quiet, and exceedingly comfortable. The A350’s smooth ride is legendary, and it’s easy to see why. With its advanced aerodynamics and spacious cabin layout (3-3-3 configuration in Economy, 32-inch pitch, and 17.5-inch width), the aircraft continues to position Vietnam Airlines as one of the most reliable premium carriers for Aussie travellers, an impression bolstered by its solid 4-Star Skytrax rating.
Airport Experience

Arriving at Sydney International (T1) well ahead of departure, I easily located the check-in area under the airline’s iconic golden lotus. Staff were efficient yet warm — checking baggage, confirming my visa, and assigning me seat 17D (an ideal aisle seat). Security and immigration flowed smoothly, and boarding was equally professional, with attentive staff helping me with my wheelchair transfer.
Boarding and First Impressions of Economy Class

The A350-900 felt bright and welcoming, with mood lighting setting a calming ambience. My seat was comfortable, equipped with a large personal touchscreen, USB port, pillow, and blanket. Seat pitch was generous for a full-service airline, making the 10-hour flight pleasant. I appreciated subtle touches — polished finishes, spotless cabin, and flight attendants who made everyone feel at home.
In-Flight Entertainment

The entertainment system was easy to navigate, with a clear display and decent selection of new releases and international titles. Content breadth could improve slightly, so I recommend pre-loading music or shows for extra variety. The provided headphones were functional but didn’t match the performance of personal ones.
Take-Off & Cabin Atmosphere

As we soared out of Sydney, the A350’s whisper-quiet engines made the ascent remarkably peaceful. The lighting transitioned into soft blue hues, simulating dawn. Paired with gentle air pressure control and cooler cabin air, it created a relaxed environment ideal for dozing or movie marathons.
Cabin Service
Vietnam Airlines’ cabin crew lived up to their stellar reputation. Service was attentive but never intrusive, with smiles that felt genuinely warm. Meal service was punctual and generous — two meal options, both surprisingly flavourful. Beverage rounds were frequent, and each seat came stocked with a full water bottle (a pleasant surprise in economy).
Throughout the flight, the team maintained impeccable cleanliness, checking restrooms regularly and keeping aisles tidy. It’s these small details that elevate the experience from standard to exceptional.
Arrival in Hanoi
We landed in Noi Bai International Airport right on schedule. I was smoothly provided a wheelchair for disembarkation, and airport assistance guided me swiftly through passport control and collection. Waiting for luggage took longer than expected, but upon exiting, I easily grabbed a local SIM card (unlimited calls and data for about AUD$15) — a great travel essential.
Return Flight: Hanoi to Sydney
The return leg was every bit as polished. Though Noi Bai’s terminals were busy, check-in remained efficient. After boarding, we took off on time, with equally professional service from take-off to landing. The overnight journey was serene, showcasing the A350’s exceptional climate system that minimizes fatigue on long-haul trips.
Arrival at Sydney International
What should have been a smooth end met a disappointing hiccup — ground staff mishandled my wheelchair at Sydney International, sending it to baggage claim rather than to the aircraft door. The 45-minute delay this caused highlighted an ongoing accessibility issue that airports still need to address. Mobility equipment is not luggage — it’s freedom and dignity. Vietnam Airlines’ crew were supportive, but this incident underlined the need for improved care from ground handling staff.
Final Thoughts on Vietnam Airlines
Vietnam Airlines impressed me on nearly every front. The A350-900 offers comfort, silence, and space that makes long-haul travel easy. The crew’s professionalism, attention to detail, and consistent hospitality reinforced why this airline continues to gain traction among Australian travellers. The entertainment catalogue could expand, but overall, the experience was polished, relaxing, and pleasantly memorable.
For travellers seeking reliable service, contemporary cabin comfort, and genuine Southeast Asian charm, Vietnam Airlines deserves a top spot on your list. Whether bound for Vietnam’s vibrant cities or beyond, the golden lotus delivers the experience it promises — a seamless, modern, and memorable journey.
