Cruise ships are often seen as floating cities, offering world-class amenities while navigating the world’s most breathtaking coastlines. But with this grandeur comes a critical environmental challenge—reducing carbon emissions. In an industry-wide first, TUI Cruises has partnered with behaviour change service Signol to tackle fuel efficiency using crew engagement and data-driven insights.
A New Approach to Decarbonisation
As part of its Sustainability Strategy 2030, TUI Cruises has already implemented a range of innovative solutions to minimise emissions, including:
- Shore power capabilities to reduce reliance on onboard engines while docked.
- Low-emission fuels and advanced exhaust gas cleaning systems to lower environmental impact.
- Future-proof propulsion systems for new cruise vessels.
Now, with Signol’s behaviour change expertise, crew members aboard TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff vessels will actively contribute to fuel-saving efforts through scientifically designed behavioural techniques.
Harnessing Crew Behaviour for Fuel Efficiency
Signol’s approach focuses on four key operational areas where Captains and Chief Engineers can optimise fuel consumption. Among them, ensuring on-time departures helps minimise unnecessary engine use, reducing emissions in a measurable way. By leveraging performance data, Signol has tailored its analysis to the unique demands of cruise ship operations, providing a sophisticated and personalised service.
Personal Goals & Environmental Impact
Crew members will receive individual fuel-saving goals based on their previous behaviour, delivered via Signol’s web app and direct email communications. To further incentivise action, TUI Cruises will make charitable donations for every fuel-saving milestone achieved.
These donations will support Enaleia, a United Nations-awarded Greek social enterprise that works with more than 6,000 fishers to collect and recycle marine plastic, integrating it into the circular economy through products like recycled kayaks.
An Industry-First Initiative
The partnership between TUI Cruises and Signol represents a significant breakthrough in sustainable cruising. By making fuel efficiency a human-centred mission, the initiative ensures that seafarers—from cruise ship crews to fishing communities—are at the heart of marine conservation efforts.
Harriet Hunnisett Johnson, Head of Maritime at Signol, highlighted the importance of engaging crew members directly:
“By working closely with TUI Cruises’ captains, we’ve developed a tailored approach that places fuel-saving opportunities into their daily routine while maintaining safety and operational excellence.”
Leading the Future of Sustainable Cruising
Cruise industry leaders increasingly recognise the importance of behaviour-driven sustainability, and TUI Cruises is at the forefront of this transformation. Using advanced data analysis and crew-led decision-making, the Signol partnership sets a new standard for responsible cruising.
With global travel experiencing a resurgence, sustainability is no longer an option—it’s a necessity. TUI Cruises’ efforts underscore a future where luxury travel and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
