Rex Airlines has introduced the Melbourne-Perth route strategically to broaden its domestic reach. This route, designed to cater to the budget-conscious traveller, offers Australians an affordable and reliable travel option. With economy fares starting from just $299 and business class tickets at $999, passengers can now experience a comfortable journey without breaking the bank.
The service, which will operate five days a week, is set to become the third airline option for travellers flying between these two major cities, joining Qantas/Jetstar and Virgin. Rex’s General Manager for Network Strategy, Warrick Lodge, expressed confidence that the new service will add approximately 90,000 seats annually to one of the nation’s most frequented air routes, signalling a boon for business, trade, tourism, and everyday travellers.
Rex Airlines, with its impressive track record for punctuality and lower cancellation rates, is set to bring a new level of competition to the Melbourne-Perth route. As Rex’s General Manager for Network Strategy, Warrick Lodge, points out, this competition will directly benefit consumers. He highlighted that Rex’s rivals had cancelled 57 flights on this route in the first four months of 2024, while their combined on-time performance stood at about 72%. With Rex’s entry, passengers can expect improved services and more competitive fares.
The Melbourne-Perth route marks Rex’s 11th domestic service, with its Boeing 737 fleet now connecting major capital cities and sought-after destinations such as Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart, and the Gold Coast. The airline is also gearing up to announce another domestic route soon, further expanding its network.
The announcement of the Melbourne-Perth route has been met with enthusiasm by Victorian officials. Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos welcomed the additional flights, anticipating a surge in visitors from Perth eager to explore Victoria’s attractions. Similarly, Minister for Jobs and Industry, Natalie Hutchins, lauded the development, predicting job creation and increased capacity on this key flight corridor, which is expected to attract more visitors to the state. This endorsement from the government further solidifies the value and potential of the new route.
As Rex Airlines expands with this new route, it promises to deliver value for money and the reliability that travellers prioritize for long-distance journeys. The airline’s expansion is a testament to its commitment to enhancing connectivity across Australia, fostering economic growth, and providing travellers with more travel choices.
