Thanks to the Flying Kangaroo’s new service that took off last week, Qantas customers can now enjoy the convenience of flying nonstop from Brisbane to Manila. This new route reinforces Qantas’ commitment to the region and offers a seamless gateway to the vibrant capital of the Philippines.
Inaugural Flight and Schedule
The inaugural flight departed Brisbane on Monday evening and will operate four times per week using the airline’s Airbus A330 aircraft. This new service adds more than 100,000 seats annually between Australia and the Philippines, complementing Qantas’ existing daily flights from Sydney to Manila and strengthening its presence in this key market.
Enhanced Connectivity
The new Brisbane-Manila route also improves connectivity for passengers travelling from New Zealand. With easy connections in both directions from Auckland and Christchurch via Brisbane, it is more convenient for travellers from New Zealand to reach the Philippines.
A Rich History of Service
Qantas has a long and storied history of operations in the Philippines, dating back to 1947 when it first touched down with Lancastrian aircraft supporting Australian Government military operations. The airline introduced Super Constellation passenger services in 1950 and commenced the first jet flights between Australia and Manila in 1961 with Boeing 707 services, eliminating the need for a stopover.
Today, Qantas operates over 300,000 seats annually between Australia and the Philippines and will celebrate 75 years of passenger services between the two countries in 2025.
Comments from Qantas and Brisbane Airport Executives
Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace highlighted the significance of the new route, stating, “The Philippines is a very strong market for Qantas, and we are pleased to be responding to demand for our services with new flights from Brisbane. This new direct flight will make it easier and faster for Queenslanders to get to the Philippines in a single hop.”
Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff added, “The addition of this Qantas service further strengthens Brisbane Airport’s connections into Southeast Asia. The Philippines is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and a key trading partner for Queensland. With our state home to a vibrant Filipino community, the business and tourism opportunities generated by this expanded connectivity will no doubt be a success.”
Expanding International Network
The launch of the Brisbane-Manila route follows Qantas’ recent expansion of its international network from Brisbane, including new flights to Palau and upgrades to some Auckland and Los Angeles services with the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline recently commenced services from Brisbane to Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, and added two extra weekly flights to Singapore.
