The spirit of adventure on Colombia’s Magdalena River just got a major upgrade with the launch of AmaWaterways’ second luxury river cruise ship, AmaMelodia. This exciting milestone follows the celebrated debut of AmaMagdalena earlier this year and cements the company’s long-term commitment to both sustainable tourism and meaningful cultural connections across Colombia.
A New Chapter for Colombian River Cruising
The introduction of AmaMelodia is more than a brand expansion; it’s a sign of AmaWaterways’ confidence in Colombia’s future as a world-class river cruise destination. CEO Catherine Powell shared, “After seeing the incredible response to AmaMagdalena earlier this year, we are thrilled to welcome AmaMelodia to the AmaWaterways fleet. Launching these two ships has been an extraordinary collaboration with our Colombian partners. Together, we are not only creating unforgettable travel experiences for our guests but also helping to build a sustainable foundation for tourism that benefits local communities along the river.”
Unmatched Comfort and Scenic Views
Designed for just 64 guests, AmaMelodia maximises comfort while showcasing the lush landscapes and vibrant towns along the Magdalena. Staterooms, ranging from 22sqm to 30sqm, come with twin balconies, offering the perfect vantage for taking in the ever-changing Colombian scenery. Onboard, you can expect a mix of locally inspired Latin American cuisine and Western favourites in the Main Restaurant, lively entertainment in the Main Lounge, and ultimate relaxation in the Sun Deck whirlpool as you cruise one of South America’s most iconic waterways.
Celebrating Colombian Culture and Artistry
Every element of AmaMelodia’s décor is crafted with a deep appreciation for Colombian culture—from hand-made touches by local artisans to dishes that make the most of regional ingredients. AmaWaterways has truly captured the richness and vibrancy of Colombian life, ensuring your journey feels authentic from start to finish. Passengers can choose from two immersive seven-night itineraries—Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia—each designed to delve into the Magdalena Valley’s biodiversity, music, cuisine, and captivating history.
Immersive Excursions for Authentic Connection
AmaMelodia’s excursions are curated for genuine cultural connection:
- Witness a private performance of the Barranquilla Carnival
- Enjoy an exclusive jazz concert in the historic town of Mompox
- Visit Palenque, the first free town in the Americas
These experiences not only enrich your travels, but also support local artisans, musicians, and guides by directly showcasing their traditions to appreciative audiences.
A Collaboration Rooted in Pride
Kristin Karst, AmaWaterways’ co-founder and chief brand ambassador, reflected, “Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with our Colombian partners and witnessing the pride and passion that define this country. Colombia’s spirit is woven into every detail of this ship. AmaMelodia is a celebration of that culture and a beautiful example of what can be achieved through true collaboration and respect for local heritage.”
Recognised Commitment to Sustainable Tourism
AmaWaterways’ efforts have drawn acclaim from ProColombia, the nation’s travel promotion agency, which has partnered with the company to make the river cruise vision a reality. ProColombia President Carmen Caballero said, “The Magdalena River is a symbol of national identity and a hub for sustainable development. Seeing how river tourism is giving it new meaning, connecting travellers with our traditions, landscapes, and communities, reflects the type of tourism we want to promote at ProColombia: responsible, inclusive, and transformative.”
AmaWaterways stands out as the first major river cruise line to explore the Magdalena, setting the benchmark for responsible and immersive travel in the region. With AmaMelodia joining AmaMagdalena, the company eagerly awaits welcoming even more global travellers ready to experience Colombia’s heart, soul, and hospitality.
