China Southern Airlines is set to resume its direct flights from Guangzhou to Perth on November 28, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the reconnection of Western Australia with mainland China. Perth Airport’s Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer, Kate Holsgrove, made the announcement, emphasising the substantial impact this will have on the region’s tourism industry.
With China as Western Australia’s fourth-largest visitor market, the state welcomed 54,000 Chinese visitors in 2023, contributing $230 million to the local economy. This success is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Tourism WA, the state government, and China Southern Airlines. The resumption of non-stop services, a result of this unity, is expected to further boost visitation numbers, bringing us all closer to our shared goals.
The thrice-weekly service, operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, promises to deliver 86,000 seats and 5,000 tonnes of cargo capacity annually to the Perth market. This direct air link is anticipated to enhance key export sectors such as fresh produce, business, and leisure tourism, strengthening Western Australia’s overall economic landscape.
Deputy Premier and Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti hailed the announcement as a game-changer for Western Australian tourism. The direct flights are projected to increase visitor numbers and spending significantly, energising related industries like agriculture and business. This move further cements the state’s position as Australia’s Western Gateway. Importantly, it represents a major victory for the local Chinese community in WA, offering them stronger ties with their homeland and recognising their significant contribution to our shared success.
The return of China Southern Airlines to Perth is a win for the tourism sector and a broader economic triumph. It promises to invigorate multiple facets of Western Australia’s vibrant economy.
