Norwegian Viva - Rebder: Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings announced a plan to improve connectivity for guests and crew at sea by deploying SpaceX’s Starlink high-speed internet on its ships.
Starlink offers industry-leading broadband internet access via modern low earth orbit satellites, improving the internet’s capacity, speed, and dependability on board. The company is gradually testing Starlink, beginning with Norwegian Breakaway, to roll out this game-changing technology throughout its world-class fleet.
“We are excited to provide Starlink aboard our ships in order to improve internet access at sea.” This project exemplifies Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.’s ongoing search for new and inventive ways to improve the experience for passengers and crew while sailing on our award-winning brands,” said Harry Sommer, president and CEO-elect of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “It is essential to us that this technology fulfils our high standards of quality for our guests, which is why we are implementing this cutting-edge technology throughout our fleet in stages.” Once deployed, passengers and crew will have a faster and more dependable way to remain connected with friends and family, including sharing great experiences created while at sea in real-time.”
If the trials go well, the company plans to equip seven more ships with Starlink by the end of the year, including all three of the company’s exciting new arrivals this year, Oceania Cruises’ Vista, Norwegian Viva and Regent’s Seven Seas Grandeur.
A full rollout plan is being developed, and once completed, data about the timetable and availability on individual ships will be communicated. In addition to improving the guest and crew experience, the additional bandwidth will allow for greater flexibility in onboard services. It will strengthen the ship-to-shore link for operational needs.
