As the aviation industry navigates through the ever-changing skies, Virgin Australia is set to expand its wings, filling the void left by Air Vanuatu’s recent grounding. The International Air Services Commission (IASC) has granted VA a significant increase in seating capacity on flights between Australia and Port Vila, marking a new chapter in regional connectivity.
Virgin Australia will enhance its services from Brisbane to Port Vila this June, introducing an additional 1,304 weekly seats aboard its reconfigured aircraft. This expansion is not just a temporary boost but a commitment for the next five years, starting from 28 May 2024, with the airline expected to utilise this capacity fully by the end of December.
The move follows Virgin Australia’s proactive response to the Australian government’s request, where it had already increased its service frequency from twice to five times weekly. Looking ahead, the carrier is poised to quadruple its current operations with plans to add seven more weekly flights from various east coast cities to the picturesque shores of Vanuatu.
Virgin Australia is currently the sole operator on the Australia-Vanuatu route, but its monopoly may soon be challenged. Qantas has submitted a proposal to the IASC to commence up to five weekly flights to Port Vila starting August 2024. Additionally, the Qantas Group has ambitions for its budget airline, Jetstar (JQ), to operate up to four weekly services using the spacious 232-seat Airbus A321 NEO aircraft from October.
This strategic expansion by Australian carriers unfolds against Air Vanuatu’s financial woes. Earlier in the month, Vanuatu’s national airline entered voluntary administration, with Ernst & Young Australia (EY) at the helm as its liquidator. Despite the optimistic outlook for a swift resumption of normal operations, the airline’s substantial debt of approximately $110 million casts a shadow over its future.
As the story of Air Vanuatu remains uncertain, Virgin Australia’s ascent signifies a beacon of hope and growth in the Pacific aviation market. With the promise of increased connectivity and enhanced services, travellers can look forward to exploring the enchanting archipelago with greater ease and comfort, courtesy of Virgin Australia’s ambitious flight plan.
