United Airlines has just notched up a major milestone in inflight tech, receiving FAA certification for its first mainline aircraft fitted with SpaceX’s Starlink system. The first commercial flight on a Starlink-equipped Boeing 737-800 is scheduled to take off from Newark/New York on October 15, bringing game-changing, high-speed Wi-Fi to United customers—and yes, it’s completely free for MileagePlus members.
This isn’t just a one-off upgrade. United has installed Starlink on more than half its regional fleet already, rolling out the service at a rate of around 50 jets per month. The results? Travellers are loving it, with 90% of customers on Starlink regional flights pleased with connection speeds and seamless streaming.
Streaming, Shopping and Gaming—All at Cruise Altitude
The Starlink system allows passengers to binge-watch Netflix, shop online, and even game from 35,000 feet, all thanks to Wi-Fi speeds up to 250 Mbps. United’s Vice President of Digital Technology, Grant Milstead, summed it up: “Our first Starlink-equipped mainline aircraft will bring a superior inflight experience to even more people.”
Why Starlink Is a Game-Changer
Not only is it a technical leap forward (lighter and quicker to install, with better reliability), Starlink’s system means reduced aircraft weight and improved fuel efficiency—a win for United’s operational costs and a greener footprint. The installation process is faster and less complex than conventional systems, and it stands up to harsh weather better too.
What’s Next?
The FAA approval covers design, testing, and safety, and United is gunning to get Starlink installed across more than 16 aircraft models in both the regional and mainline fleets. MileagePlus® members can enjoy unlimited, high-speed Wi-Fi as well as next-level inflight entertainment—and if you’re not already a member, sign-up is totally free.
Ready to Fly Connected?
As other airlines continue to trial faster inflight connectivity, United is firmly ahead of the pack—making journeys more comfortable and productive for Aussie travellers heading Stateside or anywhere across the globe.
