Australia is gearing up for a vibrant and robust summer cruise season in 2025-26, with 63 cruise ships from 24 lines set to sail Down Under, promising a diverse array of experiences and a youthful, growing cruising market. As one industry leader noted, “Cruising’s appeal keeps expanding globally, and there’s no denying Australia ranks among the world’s most breathtaking cruise destinations. This coming summer will deliver a spectacular variety of adventures aboard some of the planet’s most impressive ships”.
A Bustling Cruise Season Ahead
From October 2025 through April 2026, Australia’s waters will see an exciting flurry of cruise activity across every coastal state and territory, attracting hundreds of thousands of passengers. Key ports such as Sydney, Brisbane, and others along New South Wales’ Sapphire Coast expect millions of cruise guests, contributing billions annually to the local economy. Major cruise operators, including Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and premium brands such as Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, will offer itineraries that explore Australia’s scenic and cultural riches.
Younger and Newer Cruise Passengers
The cruising demographic is notably younger, with the global average cruise guest age dropping to 46.5 years and a third of all cruisers under 40. Australia has seen a rise in first-time cruisers, now around 31%, compared to 24% pre-pandemic in 2019. This fresh wave of cruisers is buoyed by growing interest in niche segments such as luxury and expedition cruising. Millennials and Gen X are particularly enthusiastic, helping to drive momentum in the region’s cruise industry.
Industry Momentum and Conference Insights
The Cruise360 Australasia conference held in Brisbane in August 2025 gathered over 850 delegates from cruise lines, travel agents, and industry stakeholders to discuss evolving trends. Highlights included the growth of luxury cruises, expedition voyages, and strategies to engage the rising multigenerational customer base. The conference championed a theme of “Navigate, Innovate, Excel,” emphasising innovation and expanding cruise opportunities in the region.
Economic and Tourism Impact
Cruise tourism plays a significant role in Australia’s economy, injecting nearly $8.5 billion annually into local ports and communities. Sydney remains a focal homeport, while newer destinations continue to gain attention from cruise lines seeking unique, immersive experiences for their guests. The diversity of ships—from mega contemporary liners to intimate expedition vessels—underlines Australia’s status as a premier cruising destination with broad appeal.
This energetic summer cruise season promises to be an outstanding chapter for Australia’s cruise tourism, inviting both seasoned travellers and newcomers to explore the stunning coastal landscapes aboard some of the world’s most extraordinary ships.
