Hurtigruten, a pioneer in sustainable travel, has unveiled updated plans for its ambitious Sea Zero project. The project aims to launch a zero-emission cruise ship by 2030. This innovative vessel, currently in the research and development phase, promises to revolutionise the cruising industry with its cutting-edge technology and eco-friendly design.
A Glimpse into the Future
The Sea Zero project, announced in October 2022, has made significant strides. The latest renderings, developed in collaboration with Vard in Ålesund, Norway, showcase a ship that integrates large batteries, retractable sails, and other advanced solutions to achieve emission-free sailing during normal operations. These innovations are expected to reduce energy consumption by 40-50%.
Key Features and Innovations
- Battery Power: The ship will primarily rely on batteries with a capacity of around 60 megawatt-hours, ensuring a substantial reduction in emissions.
- Retractable Sails: The OceanWings sails, which can be raised and lowered as needed, are projected to cut energy consumption by approximately 10%.
- Solar Panels: Integrated solar panels will contribute an additional 2-3% in energy savings.
- Air Lubrication: By pumping air bubbles beneath the hull reduces drag, leading to 5-10% energy savings.
- Smart Cabins: Guests will have control over their energy usage through an app, promoting awareness and participation in sustainability efforts.
Commitment to Sustainability
Hurtigruten’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond the Sea Zero project. The company is also undertaking a €100 million fleet upgrade, incorporating battery-hybrid power and state-of-the-art technology to reduce CO2 and NOx emissions by 25% and 80%, respectively. Additionally, Hurtigruten has launched initiatives to eliminate edible food waste, further solidifying its role as a leader in sustainable travel.

Looking Ahead
Hurtigruten CEO Hedda Felin emphasises the importance of reducing emissions in the cruising industry. “Our goal is to have an emission-free ship in operation by around 2030. We are still in the research and development phase, but we have made significant progress,” she stated.
The Sea Zero project represents a bold step towards a greener future for the cruising industry. With ongoing research and development, Hurtigruten is poised to set new standards in sustainable travel, offering passengers an eco-friendly and luxurious cruising experience.
