The Hari Hong Kong, one of the city’s luxury hotels situated in the vibrant Wan Chai district—a diverse, multi-cultural area with a rich historical heritage and numerous contemporary constructions—has introduced an engaging and immersive addition to its “Live Like a Local” experience. This user-friendly app, aptly named “The Hari Neighbourhood Guide Audio Tour,” dives deep into the rich history and vibrant culture of Wan Chai, featuring an interactive map and narrations of seven hidden gems, all located within a short stroll from the hotel on Lockhart Road.
Unveiling Wan Chai’s Hidden Treasures
This audio guide offers a fascinating journey through Wan Chai, showcasing its eclectic mix of past and present. Highlights include:
- A 1960s tenement block turned creative hub: Explore how this historical building has transformed into a vibrant centre for creativity.
- An exclusive, appointment-only gallery: Located in a renovated space that once served as a private rooftop clubhouse in the 1970s.
- A family-run eatery: This unassuming gem has been recognised in the Michelin food guide since 2016.
- A lively market and food centre: Immerse yourself in an energetic environment that offers a feast for all the senses.
Other must-see spots include “Villain Hitting” or Da Siu Yan, a unique form of Chinese folk sorcery, a historical typhoon shelter from 1883, the daily firing of an iconic cannon, dining on a sampan, and a dynamic harbourfront public space.
A Personal Connection
Adding a personal touch to the guide, Dr Aron Harilela, chairman and CEO of Harilela Hotels, shares his childhood memories of Wan Chai. His narration also touches on the district’s unique quirks and his love for art, which is evident in The Hari Hong Kong’s rotating collection of artworks.
“By diving beneath Wan Chai’s surface, our audio walking guide provides a layered, cultured, and singular viewpoint of our neighbourhood and its peculiarities,” Dr Harilela said. “We warmly welcome our guests to join our table and live like a local by engaging with Wan Chai’s diverse characters and fascinating traditions and ways of life.”
