Aurora Expeditions has proudly taken delivery of its newest addition, the state-of-the-art expedition vessel Douglas Mawson, from China Merchants Heavy Industry in Haimen, China. This Infinity-class ship, designed for exploration in both warm and polar waters, marks an exciting chapter in the Australian expedition operator’s growing fleet.
Named after celebrated Australian geologist and Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, the ship accommodates 170 guests and 102 crew members. It holds Ice Class 1A and Polar Class 6 certifications, enabling it to navigate some of the planet’s most challenging environments safely. Onboard, guests will find a lecture theatre, science centre, heated outdoor pool, gym and spa facilities, dedicated mudrooms for expedition gear, and multiple dining options delivering comfort and luxury throughout the journey.
The Douglas Mawson is the third Infinity-class vessel to join Aurora Expeditions, following the Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle, making it the seventh constructed by Sunstone Maritime Group. The ship’s design is a collaborative masterpiece involving Norwegian naval architects Ulstein, Swedish-American interior firm Tomas Tillberg Design USA, Finnish contractors Makinen, and the Chinese shipyard specialists.
Setting sail on its inaugural voyage, Douglas Mawson will proudly follow the footsteps of her namesake on the ‘Mawson’s Antarctica’ itinerary. This maiden season will see the ship exploring the pristine and awe-inspiring landscapes of Antarctica—offering guests a chance to experience rugged polar beauty alongside expert guides and scientists.
Carsten Lund, CEO of Sunstone Maritime Group, expressed pride in the Infinity-class’s success: “We are very pleased with the performance of our Infinity-class, and we are proud to have now delivered seven of these beautiful vessels to the expedition market.”
