In partnership with CounterCurrent, an Australia-based climate technology company, Aurora Expeditions is harnessing real-time environmental data to chart safer, smarter, and more sustainable routes through the world’s most fragile ecosystems. CounterCurrent’s advanced AI system—developed by Associate Professor Shane Keating—draws on satellite imaging, onboard sensors, and climate modelling to analyse wind, wave, and ocean current patterns. This fusion of innovation and science allows each Aurora vessel to adapt dynamically to changing conditions, cutting emissions and improving safety during complex polar passages.

Planning safe, efficient and lower-emission shipping routes relies on good data and an understanding of ocean currents, but in polar regions, real-time data is scarce. Through our collaboration with CounterCurrent and the Polar Citizen Science Collective, we’re helping fill critical data gaps in the Southern Ocean—contributing to a smarter, cleaner future for maritime travel, one where every voyage improves the next.

Technology with a Purpose

Throughout the 2025–26 Antarctic season, Douglas Mawson will host a CounterCurrent sensor system collecting live data from the world’s most remote waters. These insights will feed into global climate and weather models, improving forecasting accuracy while helping vessels operate with greater energy efficiency. In practical terms, it means fewer emissions, improved fuel optimisation, and even safer expedition routes—particularly crucial in the unpredictable Southern Ocean.

As the data accumulates, each voyage will contribute to expanding scientific knowledge of ocean dynamics, further validating Aurora Expeditions’ belief that travel can—and should—drive positive change. The collaboration represents not just a milestone for Aurora, but for the maritime industry as a whole.
