There’s a new chapter in river cruising, and it’s unfolding in the heart of Colombia. AmaWaterways has officially christened and launched its first-ever cruise on the Magdalena River, becoming the trailblazer for river cruising in the region. The milestone was marked with a vibrant ceremony this week in the charming town of Santa Cruz de Mompox.
A Star-Studded Christening
The event drew an impressive crowd, including the Governor of the Bolivar Department, national officials from the Ministries of Tourism, Transport, and Defence, and local business leaders. Their presence highlighted the strong partnerships AmaWaterways has forged with the Colombian community.
Colombian entrepreneur and interior designer Marianna Schlegel Donado had the honour of serving as godmother to the new ship, AmaMagdalena. With a ceremonial ribbon cut and the traditional bottle of champagne smashed across the bow, Donado officially welcomed the vessel to the water. She also played a key role in designing the ship’s staterooms, ensuring the interiors pay homage to Colombian artistry and culture, with many elements crafted in collaboration with local artisans.
Boutique Cruising, Colombian Style
AmaMagdalena is a boutique river ship, accommodating just 60 guests for an intimate and immersive experience. Onboard, guests can enjoy two restaurants: one specialising in Latin American cuisine and the Bolivar specialty restaurant offering an à la carte menu. The ship also boasts a sun deck with a swimming pool and a well-equipped fitness centre—perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring.
The ship will sail two seven-night itineraries between Cartagena and Barranquilla, giving guests the chance to soak up the best of Colombia’s vibrant culture and natural beauty. Highlights include a private celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival—where Donado herself is a former queen—a jazz performance in Mompox, and a visit to the historic town of Palenque. There’s also plenty of wildlife spotting, especially for keen birdwatchers, with the region home to a kaleidoscope of colourful species.
Beyond the River
For those wanting to extend their adventure, AmaWaterways offers optional pre- and post-cruise stays in Medellin, Cartagena, and even Panama City. It’s a brilliant way to make the most of your South American escape.
A New Era for River Cruising
AmaWaterways’ co-founder and CEO, Rudi Schreiner, summed up the significance of the launch:
“Today’s christening ceremony in Mompox marks a powerful moment not just for AmaWaterways, but for the future of river cruising.”
And the journey doesn’t stop here. Later this year, AmaWaterways will introduce a second ship, AmaMelodia, to the Magdalena River, further expanding options for Aussie travellers looking for something truly unique.
