Metropole Hanoi Commemorates 50 Years Since War’s End with Unique Bomb Shelter Tours

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the end of the U.S.-Vietnam War, Hanoi’s historic Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi invites guests to explore its profound wartime legacy through special “Path of History” tours. These exclusive experiences include access to the hotel’s underground bomb shelter, a site that once provided sanctuary for notable figures such as Joan Baez and Jane Fonda during the air raids of the 1964-1975 conflict.

Revisiting History

Discovered in 2011 during renovations of the Bamboo Bar, the bomb shelter offers a rare glimpse into a defining moment in history. During the tours, Metropole historians guide visitors through the chambers where visitors once sought refuge. Guests can listen to Joan Baez’s haunting song “Where Are You Now, My Son”, inspired by the bombings of December 1972. The atmosphere of the bunker evokes the resilience and bravery of those who experienced it firsthand.

In addition to the shelter, the tours showcase vintage artifacts and old photographs of iconic guests over the decades, including Charlie Chaplin, who honeymooned at the Metropole, and heads of state who have graced its halls.

Honouring Memories

As part of the commemorations, Uzaki Makoto, a former journalist for Japan’s Nihon Denpa News, revisited the hotel where he lived between 1971-1974 while reporting on the conflict. Uzaki reflected on moments spent in the bomb shelter alongside Joan Baez and others during the air raids, revisiting the room where his powerful memories took shape.
