Viking has reached a major milestone in sustainable cruising, floating out the Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen‑powered cruise ship capable of operating with zero emissions. Scheduled for delivery in November 2026, the 998‑guest small ship will debut in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, blending Viking’s signature Scandinavian design with cutting‑edge green technology.
A New Era: Hydrogen-Powered Cruising
The float‑out ceremony at Fincantieri’s Ancona Shipyard marks the first time Viking Libra has touched water, signalling her move into final construction and interior fit‑out. The ship features a hybrid propulsion system based partially on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, enabling true zero‑emission operation in sensitive environments and up to six megawatts of power from its advanced fuel cell installation. Enabled by Isotta Fraschini Motori, Fincantieri’s fuel‑cell specialist subsidiary, Libra is Viking’s most environmentally friendly vessel to date and a blueprint for future ships like the hydrogen‑powered Viking Astrea, due in 2027.
Small-Ship Design, Big Sustainability Ambitions
Classified as a small ship, Viking Libra comes in at around 54,300 gross tons, with 499 staterooms for 998 guests, all with verandas, consistent with Viking’s ocean fleet. The smaller scale allows Libra to dock closer to city centres and access smaller ports, while the hydrogen‑hybrid system is designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions well beyond regulatory requirements. Viking’s “For the Thinking Person” approach remains central, prioritising destination‑focused itineraries, calm Scandinavian interiors and cultural enrichment over theme‑park style attractions.
Awards and Recognition
Viking’s investment in thoughtful ship design and guest experience continues to resonate strongly. The company has been rated #1 for Oceans and #1 for Rivers by Condé Nast Traveler for five consecutive years in the Readers’ Choice Awards, and named a “World’s Best” by Travel + Leisure, a rare double honour. Additional accolades include multiple wins in Cruise Critic’s Best in Cruise Awards, U.S. News & World Report rankings such as “Best Luxury Line,” “Best Line for Couples” and “Best Line in the Mediterranean,” and ongoing “Recommended” ratings for its ocean ships in Forbes Travel Guide.
