A seismic shift in air travel from Australia is on the horizon, as Qantas’ first Project Sunrise aircraft—the world’s longest-range commercial jet—comes together at the Airbus assembly line in Toulouse. These exclusive A350-1000ULRs are being purpose-built for the ultimate mission: launching historic non-stop flights from Australia’s east coast direct to London and New York, shattering distance barriers and cutting up to four hours off travel time.
From Toulouse to Triumph: Milestone Moments
Major production milestones have now been reached, with the forward, centre and rear fuselage sections, wings, tail and landing gear all assembled. Next, the aircraft will move to a high-tech hangar for engine installation and flight test gear before an extensive trial program kicks off in 2026—putting science, precision and Aussie innovation centre stage.
Project Sunrise echoes Qantas’ WWII “Double Sunrise” flights, which were airborne so long they witnessed two sunrises. Today’s version is about revolutionising distance and passenger experience, not just endurance.
Ultra Long Haul, Ultra Comfort
These A350-1000ULRs aren’t just about breaking records—they’re about passenger wellbeing. Outfitted for journeys up to 22 hours, Qantas’ layout focuses on comfort, collaboration, and wellness. With just 238 seats (not the typical crammed 300+), the aircraft features a dedicated Wellbeing Zone—positioned between Premium Economy and Economy—offering guided exercise, hydration stations, and stretch handles. Even lighting and meal timing are engineered by sleep scientists and design gurus to tackle jetlag and promote rest.
Australia Connects to the World—Like Never Before
A direct flight means more than saving time. It’s set to transform how Australians (and Kiwis) experience life abroad, whether for business, tourism or connecting with loved ones. Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson sums up the change:
“Project Sunrise will fundamentally change the way our customers travel the world. These flights will cut up to four hours off the journey and transform how people experience ultra long-haul travel, through science-backed design to minimise jetlag and maximise wellbeing.”
The first of 12 game-changing aircraft is set for delivery in late 2026, with commercial services launching in the first half of 2027.
Why This Matters for Aussie Travellers
- Non-stop service to London and New York from the East Coast—no layovers, no exhausting transfers.
- Cabin designs tackling jetlag and discomfort—custom lighting, science-driven meal timing, and passenger space taken seriously.
- Wellbeing Zone for stretching, hydration and guided exercise en route—helping travellers arrive fresher and more relaxed.
- A new standard for ultra-long-haul travel that puts Australia at the forefront of aviation innovation.
Ready for a sunrise like no other? Qantas’ Project Sunrise is set to redefine global travel for Aussies—putting adventure, comfort, and convenience firmly in focus.
